Three Transformational Words Leaders Must Learn (PART I)

I DON'T KNOW

These are the words that are rarely associated with the successful leader.
These are the words that the team does not expect to hear from the person in charge.

Whether you realize it or not these words can cause a leader to feel extremely lonely. As crazy as it sounds, some leaders actually feel like it is their job to "know." Many leader stress on a daily basis trying to find new ways to demonstrate that they "know."

Consider the extreme lengths some leaders go to just to be able to give an answer or act like they know. For example, leaders:
  1. Get defensive
  2. Stress to the point of illness
  3. Blame other team members
  4. Delay results
  5. Blatantly and Strategically LIE
Even worse, consider what some leaders do when they "don't know" how to deal with the fact that they "don't know." For example, leaders:
  1. Excessively Drink
  2. Overeat
  3. Ingest Pharmaceuticals
  4. Accumulate debt/Spend Irresponsibly
  5. uncontrollably copulate (look it up)

Have you ever had to utter those gut wrenching words "I don't know?"

Healthy leaders learn to see the words "I don't know" as a gift to them. You can practice it now. These words are not weakness, they are strength. The leader that admits when they don't know is the leader that wins.

In my next post I cover why the words "I don't know" are so powerful...
