The New R&R for the Leader

This year has the potential to be the best year of your life. Leaders must rise in 2018. We must be more efficient. We must be more committed. We must have more integrity. We must reach the goals we have set. The world is depending on us.

There are two things that I am certain will provide the fuel for us to succeed.

Read

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one.”
― George R.R. MartinA Dance with Dragons

The quality of your life as a leader depends on your willingness to read. Reading is fuel. Reading is perspective. Reading is thought material. Reading is mental nutrition. You can't expect to thrive off yesterday's inspiration. Pick up a book and gaze through the lens of another thinker, another leader, another contributor. Then revisit the task of leadership. You will discover a new creativity and a new energy.

Rest

"You can't dream if you never rest"
- Rev. Dr. Charles Dorsey

Healthy leaders dream! Healthy leaders rest! They desire to do things that have never been done. Yet, some leaders never dream because they never rest. Being overcommitted and overworked means you are not resting. If you are not resting then you are not dreaming.

Make time to rest this year. Take time to sit, breathe, sleep, and disconnect. Put it on your schedule as mandatory! You are not losing time when you rest. You are investing time when you rest. You are also making room for your dreams. Don't kill another dream because you are overcommitted and overwork. Rest is the key to your success this year.

READING AND REST WILL BE THE DIFFERENCE THIS YEAR!

  1. Thank you for sharing. It is true and widely accepted that leaders tend to rest less or take less breaks. Some even working through their vacation. I was once tempted to take my laptop with me to the hospital while sick! Yikes.. Thank you again for the words of wisdom.

  2. Thank you for your response. It is so important to take the time to rest. Extraordinary leaders don't need lots of energy to appear as being healthy or being "on" as some of my peers like to say. However, the body is built to communicate deficiency after a while. We owe it to those we lead to model behavior that is sustainable. Neglecting rest is not sustainable.
